Department Profile
The Department of Biochemistry was started in the year 1988 wherein the B.Sc. (Honours) integrated course was initiated. This unique undergraduate course covers papers in basic Biochemistry such as biomolecules, enzymology, intermediary metabolism as well as advanced level papers in cell biology, immunology, molecular biology and genetics. The practical syllabus includes all major biochemistry and recombinant DNA techniques. Over 200 B.Sc. (Honours) Biochemistry graduates have passed out of the department since the first batch of 1990. The Department has the unique distinction of having over 90% Ist classes as well as University Positions every year. Several of the graduates have been selected for integrated Ph.D. and M.Sc. programmes in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and other Life Sciences at the IISc (Bangalore), NCBS ( Bangalore), Biochemistry Department UDSC, JNU, Pune, Madurai, USA, Oxford & Cambridge. The Department has been awarded a Project by the Department of Science and Technology as a part of its ‘FIST' programme wherein facilities will be available for students to take up short-term Research projects and also training in Bioinformatics.
