3. 1 NON CREDIT (QUALIFYING) COURSE IN A LANGUAGE OTHER THAN THE COMPULSORY LANGUAGE CONCURRENT COURSE

 DISCIPLINE COURSES

CONCURRENT (CREDIT) COURSES & NON CREDIT (QUALIFYING) COURSE

b) There shall be 4 Concurrent Courses, of 50 marks each for a total of 200 marks. The marks obtained in the Concurrent Courses shall count towards the final result. The four Concurrent Courses shall comprise of one Compulsory Language Course, to be chosen by a student out of English/Hindi/any other Indian Language*, and 3 other courses chosen from a set of Optional courses.

Each student, in addition, shall be required to do one compulsory non-credit (qualifying) course in a language other than the one chosen as a compulsory language concurrent course. For example, if a student chooses English as a compulsory language concurrent course, she shall be required to one compulsory non-credit (qualifying) course in Hindi/any other Indian language* or vice versa.

*Note: Hindi and Sanskrit are the only other languages offered in the College apart from English.

c) Optional Courses shall have two components:

(1) Inter-disciplinary Courses
(2) Discipline-centered Courses

The College expects to offer the following inter-disciplinary concurrent courses for the B.A. (Honours) Courses:

1. Ethics in the Public Domain
2. Reading Gandhi
3. Cultural Diversity, Linguistic Plurality and Literary Traditions

The discipline centered courses shall be taught in the second year. Details of the courses offered will be notified later.

f) A student who is enrolled in B.A. (Hons) course where a literature subject is the main discipline (namely English, Hindi or Sanskrit) shall not be required to take a Compulsory Language Course, but shall instead study the interdisciplinary Concurrent Course in language, Literature and Culture. However, such a student may opt for a language course for credit provided it is not the same language as the main discipline. For such students, the qualifying, non-credit language course has to be chosen from among the remaining languages (i.e. neither the language of the main discipline nor the one chosen as a language course for credit).

g) Students who have not studied any of the languages after Class VIII, or if the language they have studied beyond class VIII is not offered by the College, will not be required to take the compulsory course in a language. Instead, they can choose one of the concurrent courses in lieu thereof. Should a student choose a compulsory course in a language for credit, but have not studied, beyond Class VIII, any other language offered by the college, such a student can choose one of the Concurrent Courses as a non-credit (qualifying) course in lieu of the compulsory non-credit (qualifying) language course stipulated under © above.

h) The student shall opt for at least one course each from the Inter-disciplinary Courses and the Discipline-Centred Courses.

i) The choice of courses shall be regulated as per details as follows:

     (1) A student who is enrolled in B.A.(Hons) Course where a literature subject is the main discipline, cannot offer as Concurrent Course a literature paper in the same language but may choose any one literature course from among the remaining languages.
